The Welsh National Opera premiered The Makropulos Affair on Friday 16 September. The production was a huge success with immediate positive reviews from The Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian, to name a few.

“an unmissable triumph for Welsh National Opera” – The Daily Telegraph

“Tomas Hanus clearly has this music in his soul, and he inspired orchestral playing with a sharp tang, ferocious urgency and luminous tenderness” – The Times.

Each of Janáček’s operas is unique in its own right, running at the speed of thought and theatrical in the best sense of the word. The Makropulos case, with its almost detective-like plot, is certainly not a typical operatic subject, but in Janáček’s rendition, a century-old lawsuit over an inheritance quickly turns into a gripping drama about the search for the meaning of human life. This time, Makropulos Festival will present one of Britain’s finest opera companies – the Welsh National Opera under the direction of its Music Director and Brno-born conductor Tomáš Hanus. This is not the first time they have come to Brno, in 2018 they staged a great production of Janáček’s opera From the House of the Dead, and this time they will certainly prepare an extraordinary artistic experience for us.
